This is a variable checksum digit, to be assigned by manufacturer pursuant to 49 CFR § 565.15(c).

The 10th digit in the Tesla VIN indicates a letter for the year of manufacture. Until 2019 this reflect the year in which the vehicle was actually built. This changed, however, at the end of 2019 when shifted to reflect the year for which production typically started. For example, a Tesla VIN with the letter L (2020) may have been made as early as November 2019.

VIN Digits 12-17: Unique serial number

Digit 12 is the start of the sequence number, sometimes with assigned meaning as indicated below:

P = Performance
S = Signature
F = Founders

Early model Tesla VINs beginning digit 12 with B are tagged Beta. A rare Tesla VIN with the 12th digit beginning with A would reference Alpha production for the unit.

VIN digits 13 to digit 17 are general production sequence numbers assigned during manufacture and include: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0
